The economic zone is amongst the top economic locations in Germany. The perspectives for the region are superb, as renowned studies such as the Prognos Zukunftsatlas ("Atlas of the future") 2013 have confirmed. The balanced mix of branches gives security during crises. In addition, the region provides exceptional quality of life and has a comprehensive educational range of offers.

Currently, developments on the job market in the Ulm Innovation Region are most positive. The unemployment rate calculated for the Employment Agency region of Ulm based on the whole civilian labour force totalled 3.3 percent in January 2017.

The economy in the Ulm Innovation Region, which features many medium-sized companies, is based on a wide range of businesses and is therefore less subject to crises. The region is one of the leading locations for pharmaceuticals and biotechnology in Germany. In the field of transport and logistics, the region of Ulm/Neu-Ulm is one of the largest areas of growth. Further economic strengths lie in the fields of metal production and processing as well as in commercial vehicle construction and mechanical engineering.

According to an expert report by Professor Rürup, commissioned by the IHK (Chamber of Industry and Commerce) Ulm, the region will have generated extremely high requirements in terms of workforce by 2020: By then, 50,000 specialist workers and 10,000 academics will be required.
